American Landscape and Architectural Design, 1850-1920: A Study Collection from the Harvard School of Design

Amount of award: $33,214

This collection consists of 2,500 lantern slide images assembled to support teaching and student presentations in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning. It documents current thinking in design during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a period of growth and development in architecture and urban planning, which also marked the beginning of the landscape movement in the United States. It is particularly strong in its representation of parks, private estates, and gardens from all over the United States, as well as views of cities and of specific buildings. Among the architects and landscape architects whose work is included in the collection are Ralph Adams Cram, Cass Gilbert, H.H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Frederick Law Olmsted, both Senior and Junior.
